Efficient NIR light blockage with matrix embedded silver nanoprism thin films for energy saving window coating

Abstract: Highly efficient composite films, consisting of silica coated and functionalised silver nanoprisms (SNPs) which are covalently embedded in a PMMA matrix, are presented as a low-cost material to reduce thermal radiation flux with low impact on daylight transmission.

“…A silica shell was applied on the outer surface to protect the Ag-NPrs from aggregation, agglomeration, etching, and environmental damage [49]. The growth of the silica shell was achieved in an ammonium solution using alkoxysilane chemistry with the assistance of N-octyltrimethoxysilane (OTES) [48,50].…”

“…In order to evaluate the efficiency of the cluster coating as energy-saving materials, different figure of merit (FOM) values ( T vis , T sol and T vis / T sol ) (table 1; electronic supplementary material) and CIE colour coordinates ( x, y ) (figure 8) of the Nb 6 or Mo 6 @PMMA films were calculated by using a previously developed equation [33]. T sol is the integrated spectral transmittance of a window weighted with the normalized solar energy distribution spectrum, whereas T vis was calculated in a similar way, but weighted with the photopic response of the human eye [7376]. The x and y values are in agreement with the observed colour of the films.…”

“…The broad potential uses of these nanomaterials include catalysts, anti-cancer therapeutics, antimicrobials, diagnostics, water treatment, and energy-saving glazing, among others. (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9) Of these particles, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have received much attention for their physical and chemical properties, as well as the range of production methods available. The material characteristics which lend themselves to these uses come from two key features of AgNPs: very high surface-area-to-volume ratios and surface plasmons.…”
