The paper presents a method for measuring residual stresses in normal thermo-bimetal Fe-Ni-Mn/Invar strips with a thickness of 0.76 mm. For this purpose, a setup was designed which permits to remove layers from a strip substrate by electrochemical etching. Residual stresses in the directions that are longitudinal and transversal to rolling are determined by the curvature method based on the layer growing/removing techniques. As a reference, residual stresses were also determined by hole-drilling technique. Tensile and compressive residual stresses arose both in active and in passive layers and were considerably higher when determined by the hole-drilling technique.

As a special measure in lightweight design, residual stresses can be used for improving the stability and vibration behaviour of thin-walled structures. In contrast to the common practice of inducing proper residual stresses by mechanically caused local plastic deformation, in the present paper it is shown by numerical procedures as well as by experiments how such beneficial residual stresses can be produced by a proper heat treatment using laser. This is shown by simple plate examples, for proof of concept.A finite element approach is combined with algorithms simulating the heat input from laser beams. The analyses comprise investigations of a single laser dot for studying the fundamental behaviour of laser treatment according to the abovementioned aspects, and -for practical applications -continuously moving and intermittently acting beams are considered. Unwanted effects, such as distortions and possible instabilities appearing during the laser treatment, are considered as well, and methods are presented for avoiding them.A number of generic laser tracks as well as patterns of laser dots of different configurations are investigated. Experiments were performed which confirm the potential of laser treatment of plates for improving stability and dynamic behaviour.

Fatigue of thick‐walled pipes from soft martensitic and semi‐austenitic chrome‐nickel steels under pulsating internal pressure

Thick-walled components subjected to pulsating internal pressure are widely applied in high-pressure technology and in manufacturing processes such as fluid-jet cutting and highpressure cleaning, mainly in conjunction with reciprocating pumps. Corrosive fluids require high-strength and tough chrome-nickel steels with soft martensitic or semi-austenitic structure. This contribution reports on the fatigue of thick-walled plain and cross-bored pipes made from high alloy chrome-nickel steels such as X5CrNiMoCu 21 8 and X5CrNiMo 16 5. The specimens, uniaxial standard form and thick-walled pipes, were cut from forged blocks in the three axial directions. For loading with pulsating pressure, a suitable, high-frequency piston pulsation machine has been developed. The fatigue tests on pipe specimens show typical Woehler characteristics with only slight scatter and relatively good isotropy. The surprisingly large admissible pulsating pressure can be explained for the applied steels by dynamic generation of residual stresses as a result of shake-down effects. Presentation in a Smith digram explains the occurring dynamic shake-down and its favourable results in comparison to the more brittle highly tensile steels. It also reveals that heat treatment to higher tensile strength does not always yield an increase in the admissible pulsating pressure. It will be shown that static autofretting and shake-down affect the fatigue strength of thick-walled pipe specimens in the same way. Tests with internal liners in the tube specimens provide indications on the sensitivity of material failures towards fluids. The investigation aids the understanding of the fatigue behaviour and the design of components made of modern high-strength corrosion resistant steels.
