“…Eisenia arborea , an edible brown alga used in folk medicine in Japan, is the kelp species with the largest and most southerly latitudinal distribution on the North Pacific East Coast [ 41 , 42 ]. Researches on Eisenia biological activities have been focused on the evaluation of their polyphenolic compounds [ 43 ].…”

“…Recently, it has been established that a natural diet of fresh algae, whether using one species, or a combination of various brown algae, has produced better results than with animal feed (Naidoo, Maneveldt, Ruck & Bolton ). In experimental abalone cultures carried out in Baja California, Mexico, no significant differences were observed between the growth rate of abalones fed with M. pyrifera and those fed with E. arborea (Zertuche‐González, Sánchez‐Barredo, Guzmán‐Calderón & Altamirano‐Gómez ). Furthermore, culture of abalones fed with algae has environmental advantages, given that artificial food produces greater quantities of nitrates and phosphates (Qian, Wu & Ni ).…”

“…However, the company moved to land-based facilities (Searcy-Bernal et al 2010) and as of 2020 is still operating in the area of Ejido Erendira. More recently, Zertuche-González et al (2014) evaluated the growth performance of red abalone in an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture farm for one year in San Quintin Bay. Their study demonstrated the feasibility of growing red abalone juveniles at sea with a diet of Eisenia arborea.…”

“…Because of the recent variability in giant kelp biomass availability, it is important to assess other macroalgae as alternative food sources for abalone mariculture. For example, the southern sea palm kelp, E. arborea, is capable of surviving in relatively warmer waters (>20 ºC) with low nutrients, where other kelps cannot survive (Hernández-Carmona et al 2000, 2001Zertuche-González et al 2014). Therefore, E. arborea or other kelp species, such as Pelagophycus porra, may potentially provide a food supply to aquaculture operations (DOF 2018).…”
