Electroanalytical studies of sulfentrazone in protic medium, its degradation by the electro-Fenton process, and toxicity assessment using ss-DNA

Abstract: Sulfentrazone is an herbicide used as a pre-plant incorporated or pre-emergence treatment. The electrochemical oxidation of sulfentrazone was studied, by cyclic, differential and square-wave voltammetry on unmodified and on glassy carbon nanotube-modified electrodes, and by controlled-potential coulometry and electrolysis. The voltammograms of sulfentrazone showed a main irreversible diffusion-controlled pH-dependent oxidation peak. The in situ DNA-damaging capacity of sulfentrazone was also investigated, empl… Show more

“…According to Ward (1994), Bree and Murphy (1995), Dedon and Goldberg (1992), and Epe (1991), the singlet oxygen reacts with both the deoxyribose and bases in DNA and generates predominantly modified guanine residues, strand breaks, and apurinic sites. In studies carried out by Lima et al (2010), regarding the in situ DNAdamaging capacity of sulfentrazone, the authors verified an interaction of sulfentrazone with the simple strand DNA, but not with the double strand. The interaction with the simple strand occurred by sulfentrazone binding to guanine and adenine DNA bases.…”

“…Another alternative for the mitigation of sulfentrazone contamination in water was demonstrated by Lima et al (2010), through the electro-oxidation processes and the electro-Fenton method with Mohr's salt. In this work, the authors verified that the electro-oxidation process is not efficient and causes the formation of more toxic by-products.…”
