Electrochromism of a bipolar reversible redox-active ferrocene–viologen linked ionic liquid

Abstract: A ferrocene-viologen linked "bipolar" type redox-active ionic liquid ([FcCVC][TFSI]) was synthesized as an electrochromic (EC) material that functions without any other additives: solvents, supporting electrolytes and sacrificial agents. The efficiency of a prototype symmetrical EC cell was 70 cm C at 1.0 V. The EC process was stable even after over 10 000 potential cycles.

“…The representative device based on electrochemistry is an electrochromic (EC) device. EC devices that exhibit reversible color changes by modification of optical properties based on oxidation states have been developed for diverse applications including smart windows, large‐area signage, mirrors, light‐shutters, military equipment camouflage, and reflective displays . In general, EC devices are classified into three forms: type I, type II, and type III, according to the solubility of the redox species in the electrolyte.…”

“…There are various EC materials: transition metal oxides [19][20][21] such as WO 3 , 22-24 metal hexacyanoferrate (MHCF) complexes, [25][26][27] metal hydrides, 9,10 and organic polymers. [28][29][30][31][32][33] Among the EC materials, tungsten oxide, WO 3 , is a key material. The WO 3 -based ECD shows blue-bleached switching.…”

“…Conversely, assembling solid electrolytes with rigid electrode substrates is very difficult due to their nondeformability. This may limit the electronic contact between the electrode substrates and the EC material [ 125 ], leading to colorless areas in the colored state, making it more noticeable in the case of large-area ECDs.…”
