A tran sverse, co mparatively low-frequ ency standing wave has bee n ide ntified on the plasma column of a magne tically co nfined argon arc. The freque ncy of thi s wave, und e r some co riditions, obeys a dispersion relatio n give n by We in stock for a ge ne ralized hydromagn etic wave in an inhomogeneous, rotatm g plasma. The wav e frequ e ncy, which may be higher than the ion gyrofrequ e ncy, is closely co upled with th e fluid rotation velocity of the plasma. Whe n the differe nces be tween th ese passes the ion gyrofrequency, tran sition to another, as yet unid e ntifi ed, mod e takes place.
