Electrosyntheses, Spectroelectrochemical, Electrochemical, and Chronovoltabsorptometric Properties of Family of Poly (Aromatic Amines), Novel Processible Conducting Polymers: I . Poly(Benzidines)

Abstract: Direct electropolymerization of a family of aromatic amines yields novel, stable conducting polymers with good conductivity and ca. 8 weight/weight percent (0.3M) or higher solubility in doped and undoped states in organic media. The polymers are electroactive in solution and recastable as films with spectroelectrochemical and electrochemical activity identical to virgin films. Detailed properties are reported in the present communication for two of the polymers, poly(N,N′‐diphenyl benzidine) and poly(benzidi… Show more

“…The FT-IR spectrum (Fig. 6a) of the undoped P(ANi) resembles that the one reported earlier in literature [17,28,29]. The peak around 3400 cm −1 corresponds to the characteristic N-H stretching vibrations which further indicates that the polymer linkage were not at the N-group and thus likely on the aromatic ring.…”

“…6. (a) the heavily doped states of these polyanilines yield a band around 1566-1581 cm −1 , corresponding to the N-H bending of the amine salts and strong band in the 1100 cm −1 region corresponding to the dopant [17,[28][29][30]. These observations strongly suggest that the removal of fluoride by these polyanilines is via doping mechanism.…”

“…[49][50][51][52][53][54] Some monomers, as the trimer thiophene-pyrrole-thiophene, given by electropolymerization oxidized films constituted by short chains that 55,56 by reduction in some organic solvents, give soluble reduced oligomers. 57 The oxidized chains are insoluble and by reduction they solubilize in the electrolyte.…”

“…However, the irreversible reaction of the BZ· + radical cation took place and precipitation of a black product occurred, reflecting the polymerization of the benzidine. [34] Although the relationship between the applied potential and the UV/Vis spectrum is ambiguous in this SEC experiment, the sequence of the oxidation processes is reliable enough for the assignment of the CV and DPV peaks. The first and second oxidation peaks in DPV (E = + + 0.39 and + 0.49 V) were assigned to the first oxidations of the TTF and BZ units, respectively, and the third DPV peak at + 0.71 V corresponds to the oxidations of the TTF· + and BZ· + radical cations.…”
