Email Overload: Causes, Consequences and the Future

Abstract: Abstract-Email overload is a term that was defined by scientists to define a state when users are hardly capable of managing all of their incoming messages and consequently their regular work. The first signs of this problem are from 90's and today we can argue whether much has changed to better or worse since then. This paper, again, attempts to describe the problem and unlike other works which concentrate mostly on its consequences studies the causes that should be eliminated. A case study was carried out am… Show more

“…Email is an important business communication tool, and email records are regarded as legal documents similar to other business documents (Lindsell-Roberts, 2008). Because email is not a technical document management system, it suffers from several functional limitations, including versioning, searching, and insufficient storage (Vacek, 2014). Furthermore, email-based communication incurs various management problems, such as loss caused by the deletion of records or changes in the person in charge and difficulty in collecting information from several emails.…”

“…In this study we conceptualize one specific type of role overload as a key outcome of email use and a predictor of perceived stress: email overload. Email overload is the phenomenon whereby office workers do not have enough time or other resources to manage all their incoming email messages in addition to their regular work (i.e., they are overwhelmed by email) (Vacek, 2014). Thomas et al (2006) define email overload as occurring when the volume of information exceeds a person's capacity to process it (Thomas et al, 2006).…”
