Emerging trends in regenerative medicine: a scientometric analysis inCiteSpace

Abstract: A major ongoing research trend is concerned with finding alternative reprogramming techniques as well as refining existing ones for induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). A more recent emerging trend focuses on the structural and functional equivalence between iPSCs and human embryonic stem cells and potential clinical and therapeutic implications on regenerative medicine in a long run. The two trends overlap in terms of what they cite, but they are distinct and have different implications on future research.… Show more

“…Since Eugene Garfield founded the Institute for Scientific Information in 1958 (an organization that subsequently created the first ever large database of references, the Science Citation Index) and introduced the Impact Factor (the first ever prestige indicator for scientific journals), an increasing number of bibliometric indicators and tools have been developed to assess quantitatively the research performance and the scientific contributions of authors, journals, regions or specific works, analyze the dissemination and cognitive process of scientific knowledge, monitor scientific developments, and identify emerging topical areas and intellectual structures (Osareh 1996a, b;van Raan 1996;Silva and Teixeira 2008;Chen et al 2012;Cruz and Teixeira 2010). Bibliometric studies have been widely conducted in many natural and social sciences, including ISs research (Lee and Su 2010;Teixeira 2014).…”

“…CiteSpace is a freely available software package used for visualizing and analyzing trends and patterns in scientific literature retrieved from the WoS (Chen 2006;Chen et al 2012). This program makes it possible to identify systematically the intellectual origins and developments of the IS research field.…”

“…The former technique is used to select articles with specific terms in their titles, keywords, keywords plus, abstract content, or identifiers, while the latter one identifies references of the selected articles to "remedy" and expand the dataset with closely related studies of a topic. The combination of the two approaches is valid to support bibliometric analyses in judging research fronts, focuses, and bases [72]. Further, a visualization tool and analysis of the vast body of literature provides an effective method for gaining insights about trends in the directions of research.…”

“…However, it is difficult for researchers to quickly establish the understanding of the evolution and trends of their research field if the amount of scientific publications is substantial. Scientometrics provides effective bibliometric analysis methods to analyze scientific literature and can help researchers efficiently explore their specialty knowledge domain, which have already been applied in many research fields, for example, regenerative medicine [23], schizophrenia research [24], recommendation system research [25], bioenergy research [26], and geographic information systems (GIS) [27]. However, there has been no relevant research about cartography, especially about some emerging trends like eye movement research in cartography.…”
