Emotional and cognitive reactivity: Validating a multilevel modeling approach to daily diary data.

Abstract: An increasing number of studies are applying multilevel modeling (MLM) to daily diary assessments of emotional and cognitive reactivity (ER and CR). Despite their generation of promising results, these methods have yet to be validated. The current study, consisting of 449 participants from over 90 different colleges and universities, had 2 goals: (a) to assess the convergent validity of these methods in relation to more conventional measures, and (b) to assess the construct validity of these methods in relatio… Show more

“…For example, being in the laboratory together may have influenced synchrony and mean affect in both parents and adolescents ( Bronfenbrenner, 1979 ). Examining emotion dynamics in daily life is an important next step for synchrony research, as estimating the convergence of multiple methods for measuring dyadic affect dynamics (i.e., experience sampling paradigms with laboratory methods and questionnaires) will further clarify dyadic affect dynamics as a construct ( Cole et al, 2020 ). Experience sampling paradigms provide numerous possibilities for self-report, observational coding, and amalgams of the two methods.…”

“…As the nature of the study includes repeated measures across multiple participants, multilevel modelling (Cole et al, 2020) was used to account for the nested data structure to investigate whether smartphone use indicators-smartphone checking, total screen time, and screen time for each category-predicted the incidence of daily cognitive failures. Repeated measures over the course of seven days (Level 1) were nested within participants (Level 2).…”
