Enabling Semantic Technology Empowered Smart Spaces

Abstract: It has been proposed that Semantic Web technologies would be key enablers in achieving context-aware computing in our everyday environments. In our vision of semantic technology empowered smart spaces, the whole interaction model is based on the sharing of semantic data via common blackboards. This approach allows smart space applications to take full advantage of semantic technologies. Because of its novelty, there is, however, a lack of solutions and methods for developing semantic smart space applications a… Show more

“…Some exceptions to projects that only focus on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing, HCI, Sensors and Networks can be identified like [28], [27], [29], [20], [16] and [13] who proposed definitions of context and semantic processing of that information in order to be able to define the context of a smart space. Smart-M3 propose a generic architecture suitable to different kind of AmI Spaces [27] introducing the concept of domain ontologies for knowledge management despite their general approach as services without any kind of initiative, autonomy and reasoning services [27].…”

“…As pointed out by Kiljander et al [9] these solutions make the embedded system side easy to implement (since they do not need to support semantic technologies) but, on the other hand, gateways have to be modified each time an unplanned device, technology or protocol is going to be integrated on the system leading to scalability problems. The same authors propose an approach based on sharing semantic data via knowledge bases integration.…”

“…This thematic issue aims to demonstrate how Semantic Web technologies can be used to address some of the emerging challenges [2], appraising their benefits and limitations in concurrent applications. Three articles are presented, which approach these themes from different angles, including scalability and streaming sensor data, tools for domain experts, ontologies in mobile network analysis, wearable sensors and biomedical applications.…”
