“…Treatment with progestins has long been advocated to promote uterine quiescence in mares with uterine pathology. Daels and co-workers showed that supplementation of mares with the synthetic progestin altrenogest (0.088 mg/kg SID) was able to prevent prostaglandin-induced abortion [34].…”

“…32 Low-dose aspirin therapy, as used in horses with laminitis, might provide protection for placental circulation by inhibiting platelet aggregation and vasoconstriction. 33 Synthetic progestins (altrenogest 0.088 mg/kg PO every 24 hours) may be used empirically to induce uterine quiescence and reduce PGF release 34 and for its possible effect of blocking cytokines. 35 Chronic placental separation may occur concomitantly with placentitis and frequently involves a relatively small area in the vicinity of the cervical star.…”

“…Experimentally, pretreatment with flunixin meglumine was effective in preventing endotoxininduced PGF secretion and abortion 27 but is ineffective at modulation of uterine PGF production and prevention of endotoxin-induced abortion when given 1 or 2 hours after endotoxin administration and, therefore, cannot be considered reliable therapy for conditions that are likely to result in increased uterine PGF secretion. 28 Pentoxiphylline (8.5 mg/kg every 12 hours PO) can be added to the treatment regimen for its potential inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines. 29,30 Tocolytics may be useful in cases of endotoxemia or placentitis.…”

“…Flunixin meglumine, a cyclooxygenase inhibitor, prevents the production of prostaglandins stimulated by endotoxemia. It must be given very early in endotoxemia to avoid luteolysis, which in early pregnancy would lead to abortion (Daels et al 1991) and was ineffective as a sole treatment in preventing cloprostenol-induced abortion in early pregnancy (Daels et al 1995). Later in pregnancy, endotoxemia can directly compromise the fetoplacental unit, resulting in abortion.…”
