Energy efficient handover algorithm for green radio networks

Abstract: The coverage area and the capacity of existing cellular network systems are not sufficient to meet the growing demand of high data rate for wireless communications. Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) based on Long Term Evolution (LTE) can be a possible solution to enhance indoor coverage, deliver high bandwidths and off-load traffic from the macro base stations. However, this technology is still under development and several open issues have to be still investigated, such as interference coordination, power cons… Show more

“…In recent years, research on handoff is focused mainly on HetNets operating in the band of traditional frequency 900MHz-2.4GHz and considering one or more factors including RSRP, QoS of UEs, UE mobility characteristics, BS load, etc. [8], [9], [10], [11], [12]. In [8], a handoff policy is proposed that considers context parameters, such as user speed, channel gains and cell load information.…”

“…They combined handoff decisions with BS sleeping policy so as to improve system energy efficiency. [10] and [11] are mainly focused on the improvement of handoff trigger conditions. The authors in [10] proposed a new handoff triggering mechanism named Network Controlled Handover (NCH) for 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) HetNets.…”

“…The proposed mechanism makes use of a central server and the ANDSF protocol to provide energy efficiency and to balance the user preferences and their energy requirements. Araniti et al [10] propose a new handover algorithm in LTE HetNets by making use of green policies to provide an efficient management of the base stations transmitted power and reduce the unnecessary handovers of the mobile devices. Other solutions exploit the use of stochastic geometry when studying the practical implications of small cell deployment in various propagation environment models within the HetNet environment [11] [12].…”

“…In particular, differently from the algorithms proposed in [12], [13], we design a decision making algorithm that triggers a handover based on a new metric called Reference Base Station Efficiency (RBSE). This parameter takes into account three metrics: (i) the BS transmitted power, (ii) the BS traffic load and (iii) the users' spectral efficiency.…”
