Energy-efficient topology control for wireless sensor networks using online battery monitoring

Abstract: Abstract. This paper presents a first approach towards cooperative energy management in wireless sensor networks using online battery monitoring. Using a standard platform for wireless sensor networks, a simple concept for measuring the battery voltage on the mote with little additional hardware is shown. This is used for modelling of the battery discharge behaviour of Li-Ion batteries and deriving the remaining lifetime under given environmental conditions. As an application example this model can be incorpor… Show more

“…During transport sensors cannot not be removed, but they can be put to sleep this way augmenting the life time of the batteries. The sensor nodes measure their remaining energy; the routing may be changed in the way to allow nodes with weak batteries to sleep (Behrens, 2007). Also the dynamic behaviour of the temperature is analysed to adapt the duty cycle to the situation.…”

“…Currently, no logistical WSN solution is available off-the-shelf. Our own hardware development was started by the ITEM, one of our partner institutes at the University Bremen with the aim to prolong service intervals by use of ultra low power hardware components and communication planning based on energy budget monitoring (Behrens et al, 2007).…”
