Enforcing service availability in mobile ad-hoc WANs

Abstract: In this paper, we address the problem of service availability in mobile ad-hoc WANs. We present a s e c u r e m e c hanism to stimulate end users to keep their devices turned on, to refrain from overloading the network, and to thwart tampering aimed at converting the device into a \sel sh" one. Our solution is based on the application of a tamper resistant security module in each device and cryptographic protection of messages.

“…Previously proposed methods for addressing the misbehavior problem can be classified into three categories: (a) credit-based systems, e.g., [8,9,16,34], (b) reputation-based systems, e.g., [6,7,13,14,21,22], and (c) acknowledgment-based systems, e.g., [1,2,20,23].…”

“…Credit-Based Systems: Credit-based systems [8,9,16,34] are designed to provide incentives for forwarding packets in the form of credit payments. Nodes accumulate credit that can be later used to pay for sending their own traffic.…”

“…An economical model is proposed in [10,11] at the service layer in order to both stimulate the cooperation and prevent the network overloading. A virtual currency called nuggets is introduced to enforce service availability and in particular to reward the nodes participating in the packet forwarding service.…”
