Objective Disability not only affects the disabled child. It also has psychological and social impacts on family members and caregivers. The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between severity of depressive symptomes and hopelessness levels of caregivers of children with disabilities and their perceived social support. Materials and MethodsA total of 205 caregivers of disabled children were included in this cross-sectional study. A 'sociodemographic questionnaire' , 'Beck Depression Scale' , 'Beck Hopelessness Scale' and 'Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale' were used to assess the subjects in this cross-sectional study. Direct and indirect effects of a predictor in path models of mediation and moderation were calculated. The bootstrapping method has been used to calculate confidence intervals for indirect effects.Results It was determined that the hopelessness levels were high (r = 0.594, p <.001) for individuals with high levels of depressive symptomes, the perceived social support was low for caregivers with high hopelessness levels (r = −0.149, p =.033), and that the perceived social support levels were low for caregivers with high levels of depressive symptomes (r=−0.128, p =.068). It was shown that hopelessness increases, and depression develops indirectly with decreasing psychosocial support. ConclusionThis study reveals the importance of perceived social support in the development of hopelessness and depression, which increase the burden of caregivers. Increasing the psychosocial support systems of caregivers of children with disabilities can reduce their levels of hopelessness and depression and increase their ability to care.

The aim of this study is to examine perceived social support and levels of happiness in mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder. The study group of the research consists of 30 mothers providing primary care to 30 subjects (5 girls and 25 boys) aged 7-25 attending the Armağan Dönertaş Handicapped Children Education and Rehabilitation Application and Research Centre of Trakya University, and who were in the autism spectrum disorder group according to the DSM-5 criteria. In line with the purpose of the study, the participants were asked to respond to the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, whose Turkish validity and reliability study was conducted by Doğan and Akıncı-Çötok (2011), and the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, whose Turkish validity and reliability study was carried out by Arkar and Yaldız (2001). Based on the findings of the study, it was determined that the highest perception of social support was for Family Support. Furthermore, when evaluated in terms of standard deviations, it was determined that there was a more homogeneous distribution in this dimension compared to the others. It was seen that the distributions in the other dimensions were slightly above the mean. Considering the distribution of the happiness questionnaire, it was determined that the distribution was close to the mean. Moreover, it was determined that the minimum score was 77 and that the maximum score that could be obtained from the scale was 139, not 174. It was seen that the distribution was in the range of 62 points and remained within a limited structure. The findings of the study show that there was no significant relationship between the items of Happiness and Perceived Social Support. It is predicted that mothers’ levels of happiness will increase by benefitting from professional social support resources and services provided by social care experts.

Bu araştırmanın amacı özel gereksinimli çocuk sahibi ebeveynlerin psikolojik yardım alma tutumlarının psikolojik sağlamlık ve eş desteği ile ilişkisinin incelenmesidir. Araştırma örneklemini özel gereksinimli çocuk sahibi 223 ebeveyn oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak ‘Psikolojik Yardım Almaya İlişkin Tutum Ölçeği’, ‘Yetişkin Psikolojik Sağlamlık Ölçeği’, ‘Eş Destek Ölçeği’ ve çalışmacının hazırladığı ‘Kişisel Bilgi Formu’ kullanılmıştır. Ölçekler sonucunda ulaşılan verilerin analizi için SPSS 22 programı kullanılmıştır. Bağımsız örneklem t-testi, tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA) ve Pearson korelasyon analizi ile veri analizi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma sonuçları incelendiğinde; özel gereksinimli çocuk sahibi ebeveynlerin psikolojik yardım almaya ilişkin tutumları arttıkça psikolojik sağlamlık düzeylerinin arttığı, algıladıkları eş destek düzeylerinde ise düşme olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Özel gereksinimli çocuk sahibi ebeveynlerin psikolojik yardım alma tutumları, psikolojik sağlamlık düzeyleri ve algıladıkları eş destek düzeyi ile özel gereksinimli çocuğun tanısı arasında anlamlı farklılık ortaya çıkmamıştır. Özel gereksinimli çocuk sahibi ebeveynlerin psikolojik yardım alma tutumları ve psikolojik sağlamlık düzeyleri ile kişinin daha önce psikolojik yardım alma durumu arasında anlamlı farklılık ortaya çıkmamıştır. Eş destek ölçeği bazında ise daha önce psikolojik yardım almayan kişilerin eşlerinden gördükleri desteğin daha yüksek olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır.
