Enhanced Activity of TiO2/Natural Zeolite Composite for Degradation of Methyl Orange under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract: A series of titanium dioxide nanoparticles anchored on mordenite zeolite from an Indonesian natural deposit were prepared by the sol-gel route using a titanium isopropoxide sol as the precursor. Mordenite was incorporated during the sol-gel process by dispersing mordenite powder into the titania sol-gel precursor. The resulting titanium dioxide nanoparticles were in the anatase and rutile form, as confirmed by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy. Diffuse reflectance ultra violet visible (DR-UVVis) spectroscop… Show more

“…Zeolite is a porous material that has been widely used as a catalyst, adsorbent, and ion exchanger (Rahman et al, 2018). Synthetic zeolite was chosen to be the adsorbent because synthetic zeolite has the physical properties that much better than those of natural zeolite.…”

“…One of the most successful methods for preparing the nano-sized metal oxide materials is the sol-gel method; hence, this method is suitable for application in the preparation process of the ZnO-Zeolite nanocomposites. The sol-gel method is used for the preparation of thin films and powder-shaped materials, where the alkoxides are hydrolyzed by alcohol to metal hydroxides (Rahman et al, 2018).…”

“…Zeolite is used as a carrier molecular because its crystal structure is porous and has a large surface area, it is composed of a silica-alumina skeleton, it has a high thermal stability, and its presence is quite abundant (Wang and Peng, 2010). The pore structure of zeolite also allows it to be used as a host material (Rahman et al, 2018). Moreover, zeolite is recommended for the degradation of dye through adsorption due to its large surface area (Viswanathan, 2018).…”

“…Therefore, many attempts have been made to enhance the photocatalytic performance, such as by modification of the ZnO structure in order to increase the surface area and light absorption (Kadam et al, 2018). Furthermore, doping the ZnO nanoparticles with noble metals (Dermenci et al, 2014), lanthanide groups (Vaiano et al, 2017), natural zeolite (Rahman et al, 2018), and Fe3O4 (Winatapura et al, 2016) have also been reported as promising candidates for enhancing the photocatalytic activity. In general, Ag nanoparticles are more attractive as dopants compared to other noble metals because of their high electrical and thermal conductivity, non-toxicity, cost-effectiveness, and high work function (Kadam et al, 2018).…”
