Purpose The purpose of this paper is to capture the status of implementation of Six Sigma in various manufacturing industries and also examine the success of the Six Sigma by using different performance indicators. Design/methodology/approach The methodology of critical review involves the selection and classification of 112 research articles on the implementation of Six Sigma in different manufacturing industries. The selected articles are categorized by the following: articles distribution based on the year of publication, publication database, various journals, contribution of authors, continent, scale of industry, implemented approaches, focused industry, tools and techniques used in phases of Six Sigma methodology, and performance indicators used in Six Sigma implementation. Then after, future scopes of research opportunities are derived based on significant findings. Findings The literature revealed that: Very few work was undertaken on the implementation of Six Sigma in various manufacturing industries like ceramic, paper, gems and jewelry, cement, furniture, stone, fertilizer, forging, paper and surface treatment industries. Most of the researchers have considered very few performance indicators to identify the improvement after Six Sigma implementation. But, there is no clue regarding overall improvement in different perspectives after the implementation of Six Sigma. The financial indicators, personnel indicators, process indicators and customer indicators are useful to measure the overall improvement after the implementation of Six Sigma in the manufacturing sector. Research limitations/implications The study was carried out on the implementation of Six Sigma methodology in various manufacturing industries, and various performance indicators were identified while implementing the Six Sigma methodology. Case studies pertaining to service industries were not covered here. Originality/value Very little research has been carried out to measure the overall success of implementing Six Sigma methodology in manufacturing industries. This paper will provide value to students, researchers and practitioners of Six Sigma by providing insight into the implementation of Six Sigma in manufacturing industries.

Product quality has now become one of the main factors that every company must have to compete globally. One way is to reduce the number of defective products in the production process. This method is a continuous improvement effort made by PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia and companies engaged in the automotive sector that produces cars. One of the processes is packing roof panels whose output will be sent to importing countries where the number of requests per month is relatively high but still has a high defect rate. Based on production data and defect data for the January-February 2019 period, roof panel packaging production has a 1% -3% defect rate. This company must reduce the defect rate to achieve the company target of zero defects. This study aims to improve the quality of the packaging process by minimizing the number of defective products. This study uses the Six Sigma method with DMAIC phases. This method has several phases, namely, Define, Measure, Analysis, Improvement, and Control. Corrective action to reduce product defects based on 5W + 1H is to formulate a repair plan at the upgrade phase, namely by making SOPs spraying anti-rust and supervising operators who produce roof panel packaging. The improvement results reduced the DPMO value from 33,500 units to 2,050 units and increased the sigma level from 3.33 to 4.37. The DMAIC phase effectively controls and improves product quality levels in the automotive industry.

This article proposes a new model for concurrent Lean-Kaizen based on the Lean production thinking. According to the concept and application scenarios of value stream mapping and DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control), we proposed an integrated VSM-DMAIC by adopting their advantages and avoiding their disadvantages. The VSM-DMAIC model is applied to tackle the production problems on production line. Value stream mapping is used to identify the production problems during production processes by waste identification. Then, the production problems are clustered into different production problem sets according to the changed types of production resources while solving production problems. The data envelopment analysis method is used to rank the production problems by inputoutput ratio, and the most important production problem in each set can be the concurrent Lean-Kaizen. DMAIC provides a structured problem-solving method for production problems. Finally, the production problems and production problem sets will be reassessed for the next concurrent Lean-Kaizen. A case study of an air-conditioner assembly line verified the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed VSM-DMAIC model, which can be used to improve the economic benefits and decrease the waste of production line.
