Show more

“…Their efforts have contributed to major activity in basic research related to stimulus equivalence over the past four decades (e.g., Arntzen, 2012). Because the technology was developed based on applied contexts, such as teaching basic reading skills to people who were often seen as too poorly functioning to learn reading, the technology has had a significant impact in applied contexts (e.g., de Rose et al, 1996; Mackay, 1985; Matos et al, 2006; Millan & Postalli, 2019). A basic question repeatedly raised throughout Sidman's research was how a researcher or teacher could communicate effectively with others, including people who have not exhibited verbal behavior (e.g., Sidman & Stoddard, 1966).…”

“…In a study with a population with different repertoires ‐ ID, preschoolers, students with learning difficulties and illiterate adults ‐, students with ID needed remedial procedures, and of five participants, three could not read generalization words (Melchiori et al., 2000). In 2019, the procedure was conducted with two children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) using multi‐sample matching ‐ three sample stimuli and three comparison stimuli ‐ to teach the relations between picture and printed words, with an increase in reading in the final tests (Millan & Postalli, 2019). These data show that the set of individualized tasks, using equivalence‐based instruction, proved to be efficient for most students, but that it would still be necessary to plan additional strategies that work for all students, especially those with ID and ASD.…”

“…Although successful results based on stimulus equivalence technology were achieved (de Rose et al., 1989; de Souza et al., 1997; Melchiori et al., 2000; Millani & Postalli, 2019; Sidman, 1971; Sidman & Tailby, 1982), there is a lack of studies that included parents and teachers as implementers of this kind of equivalence‐based instruction. One plausible hypothesis is that the involvement of family members and teachers when applying the procedure in a natural environment might be a viable strategy to guarantee good teaching conditions for students with ID and ASD, through the use of teaching technologies that could facilitate the training of these teaching agents, in addition to enabling the teaching of reading and writing, as an alternative learning tool.…”
