Environmental Congruence, Group Importance, and Well-Being Among Paratroopers

Abstract: The study examined the relation between variables of environmental congruence (or Person-environment fit; P-E fit) and group importance on the one hand and variables of satisfaction and somatic complaints on the other. Participants were 267 paratroopers who belonged to 35 units (environments). Both the diadic and the census methods were used to assign congruence scores. Findings showed (a) group importance correlated .55 and -.25 (p < .05) with satisfaction and somatic complaints, respectively, while congru… Show more

“…We believed group importance to be a crucial dependent variable because group importance is a direct predictor of satisfaction with a group (e.g. Meir & Segal-Halevi, 2001). It also provided a measure of the group's value, without directly assessing either bond or identity attachments.…”

“…The SDS was translated into Hebrew and adapted for use in the Israeli culture. Numerous studies have provided findings that support the reliability and validity of the Hebrew version, with measurements similar to the original ones (Meir, Hadas, & Noyfeld, 1997;Meir & Hasson, 1982;Meir, Keinan, & Segal, 1986;Meir & Segal-Halevi, 2001;Meir & Tzadok, 2000).…”

“…A elevada importância do grupo foi suficiente para altos níveis de satisfação, independentemente da congruência, ao passo que uma baixa importância do grupo esteve relacionada a baixos níveis de satisfação, exceto quando havia uma elevada congruência. Nos casos em que a importância do grupo esteve em um nível médio, quanto maior congruência, maior satisfação (Meir & Segal-Halevi, 2001). Logo, a importância do grupo de trabalho foi um moderador importante da relação entre congruência e satisfação.…”
