Epidemiological and clinical pattern of dermatomycoses in rural India

Abstract: Superficial fungal infections are most common in tropical and subtropical countries. In this study, 297 suspected superficial fungal infection cases were identified among 15,950 patients screened. The collected samples (skin, nail, and hair) were subjected to direct microscopy with potassium hydroxide and cultured on Sabourauds dextrose agar to identify the fungal species. The prevalence of superficial fungal infection was 27.6% (82/297), dermatophytosis was 75.6% (62/82), and non-dermatophytosis was 24.4% (20… Show more

“…Dermatomycoses were seen in 61.5% of cases in our study (Table 2), while in a study in Tamil Nadu in India in 2015 the prevalence of dermatomycoses was 27.6%, which was less as compared to ours [8]. In a study by Veer et al [9] in Aurangabad, India, dermatomycoses of nail were seen in 48.86% of cases which was also less than the percentage in our study.…”

“…In a study by Veer et al [9] in Aurangabad, India, dermatomycoses of nail were seen in 48.86% of cases which was also less than the percentage in our study. We found nail as the commonest (55.8%) site of superficial fungal infection followed by skin (35%) and hair (9.1%); Lakshmanan et al [8] in 2015 had found skin as the commonest site of superficial infection, followed by nail and hair.…”

“…In rural India, the positive rate is very similar to our finding (27.6 %) [4], but in other studies the positivite rate ranged from 14.2 % to 52.2 % [5-12]. This variation may be due to the climatic condition.…”

“…Dermatophytoses are the most frequent fungal infections in the world, affecting various age-groups and causing a reduction on the patient's quality of life, not to mention the financial aspect of the medical treatments [51]. M. gypseum is responsible for 20 % of the dermatophytic infections and the main problems concerning their eradication are the increase in the resistant strains, shortages in a variety of the antifungal classes and toxicity associated with the treatment [52].…”
