“…Both proliferation of satellite cells and protein synthesis and degradation in developing muscle fibers play crucial roles in muscle growth and development in beef cattle [24]. Our previous studies [25,26] and results of the current study indicate that active GPER-1, MMP2/9 and hbEGF are required to support E2-mediated increases in both proliferation of mononucleated satellite cells and protein synthesis rate in fused BSC, while E2-mediated decreases in protein degradation rate in fused BSC does not require activity of these factors. We believe it is significant that E2 regulation of two dissimilar processes such as proliferation rate in unfused proliferating satellite cells and protein synthesis rate in fused BSC requires active GPER-1, MMP2/9 and hbEGF while the effect of E2 on protein degradation rate in fused BSC does not require these factors.…”

“…Moreover, decrease in the level of sex hormones with age is responsible for the development of sarcopenia in 30% of individuals aged over 60 years ( 35 , 36 ). Furthermore, results obtained from rodent models demonstrated that androgens and estrogens augment skeletal muscle satellite stem cell activation and modulate inflammatory processes during skeletal muscle regeneration ( 9 , 12 ). Despite the fact that gonadal sex hormones affect expansion of skeletal muscle cells, very little is known about the role of gonadal and pituitary sex hormones in RMS pathogenesis.…”

“…First, it is well known that these hormones are involved in both developmental growth and regeneration of skeletal muscles ( 9 11 ). For example, skeletal muscle satellite stem cells respond to stimulation by estrogens and androgens ( 9 , 12 ). Second, pediatric sarcomas, including RMS, share several common markers with the germ line-derived cells.…”

“…Insulinlike growth factor-1 is known to activate porcine SC through the mTOR pathway . Treatment with IGF-1, FGF, EGF, or TGFβ increase proliferation rates in bovine satellite cells (Greene and Allen, 1991;Kamanga-Sollo et al, 2008Reiter et al, 2014). Furthermore, treatment of fused bovine SC cultures with IGF-1, FGF, EGF, or TGFβ results in increased protein synthesis rates (Kamanga-Sollo et al, 2004;Reiter et al, 2014).…”

Furthermore, treatment of fused bovine SC cultures with IGF-1, FGF, EGF, or TGFβ results in increased protein synthesis rates (Kamanga-Sollo et al, 2004;Reiter et al, 2014). However, treatment of bovine SC cultures with IGF-1 stimulates differentiation, whereas treatment with EGF, FGF, or TGFβ inhibits differentiation (Allen and Boxhorn, 1987;Greene and Allen, 1991).…”
