Epithelial tumors of the ovary: comparison of MR and CT findings.

Abstract: Forty patients with 50 ovarian epithelial tumors of the ovary were retrospectively studied. They underwent computed tomography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging within 1 week of surgery. MR examinations were performed with a superconducting magnet (0.5 T) and predominantly T1- and T2-weighted MR imaging. T1-weighted MR images were obtained in eight patients after contrast material was administered. Signal intensity of tumors was compared with that of urine, muscle, and fat. Morphologic features that were eva… Show more

“…Several reports of different imaging features have compared mucinous with serous cystadenoma, and benign with malignant tumors (8,9). A tumor which is a unilocular or bilocular cystic mass showing homogenous CT attenuation or MR signal intensity of locules, and which has a thin regular wall and/or a thin regular septum without any endocystic or exocystic vegetation, is classified as a benign serous cystadenoma.…”

“…A tumor which is a unilocular or bilocular cystic mass showing homogenous CT attenuation or MR signal intensity of locules, and which has a thin regular wall and/or a thin regular septum without any endocystic or exocystic vegetation, is classified as a benign serous cystadenoma. One which is a multilocular cystic mass with a thin regular wall and septa, or contains liquids of different attenuation or signal intensity without endocystic or exocystic vegetation, is classified as a benign mucinous cystadenoma (8,9). In contrast to benign ovarian tumors, borderline or malignant ovarian tumors present as large lobulated masses with a larger solid portion, a thick and irregular wall, and septa of the masses.…”

“…Doppler utrasonogram image of the mass shows vascularization with pulsatility, a finding that is suggestive of a malignant mass (Fig. 1) [4,5]. The magnetic resonance imaging also showed 10 × 7 × 4.8 cm sized mass lesion consisted of multicystic component and large amount of solid component, mainly along the cyst wall suggestive of left ovarian tumor, borderline to malignancy (Fig.…”

“…The magnetic resonance imaging also showed 10 × 7 × 4.8 cm sized mass lesion consisted of multicystic component and large amount of solid component, mainly along the cyst wall suggestive of left ovarian tumor, borderline to malignancy (Fig. 2) [4,5]. As the result of the imaging studies was suspicious for malignancy, we thoroughly explained the natural history, prognosis of disease, available treatment methods, and their possible risks and discussed with the patient and her family.…”
