Equation of State for Phospholipid Self-Assembly

Abstract: Phospholipid self-assembly is the basis of biomembrane stability. The entropy of transfer from water to self-assembled micelles of lysophosphatidylcholines and diacyl phosphatidylcholines with different chain lengths converges to a common value at a temperature of 44°C. The corresponding enthalpies of transfer converge at ∼-18°C. An equation of state for the free energy of self-assembly formulated from this thermodynamic data depends on the heat capacity of transfer as the sole parameter needed to specify a pa… Show more

“…Second, it may affect the chemical potentials of the lipids (µ mv and µ s ). But the thermodynamics of general lipid self-assembly shows that micelles and SLBs are in thermodynamically equivalent states [44,45], suggesting that they have the same dependence on temperature and any resulting difference in µ mv − µ s should be largely independent of temperature. In addition, temperature can modulate the frequency shift ∆ f c by altering lipid packing density:…”

“…As it is possible to appreciate, multiple utilities for these structures have been proposed, relevant for several biomedical and biotechnological applications. These studies coincide in the fact that is necessary to find a method which produces stable self-assembled phospholipid bilayers that can resist important changes in environmental conditions and remain in a functional state [ 13 , 14 ].…”
