This research explored the pronunciation errors produced by the students in their vlog projects and the linguistics factors that contributed to their errors. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from the vlogs made by the students which were uploaded on Youtube channels. The participants were 30 students of the Air Transport Management study program in STTKD Yogyakarta. The data collection technique was done by observation and documentation. The data were analyzed by applying qualitative data analysis. The data were classified using the theory from Bonaventura, Herron, and Menzel (2000). The results showed that there were 67 pronunciation errors existed in the vlog projects. The mispronunciations could be categorized into three types of errors, namely: the problems of non-native sounds as many as 34%, the carry-over of pronunciation regularities from the mother tongue as many as 45%, and the over-generalization of target language (L2) regularities as many as 21%. It is expected that the findings can help students diagnose their errors and mistakes in English pronunciation and later can motivate them to improve their English proficiencies. Besides, it can help the teachers develop strategies to minimize students’ errors in pronunciation.

The Pronunciation of English Low Vowels by Iraqi EFL Learners: An Intralingual Analysis

Iraqi EFL learners of English are reported to show accented pronunciation on the segmental level, which might affect their speech intelligibility. This study aimed to identify problems encountered by Iraqi EFL learners in the production of English low vowels and account for them from an intralingual perspective. The study also aimed to identify the effect of Iraqis' English language proficiency level on their pronunciation of English low vowels. Thus, learners were divided into beginners and advanced groups to determine differences between them based on their proficiency level in English. A production test was conducted to identify error patterns of twenty Iraqi EFL learners in producing low vowels. Learners’ recordings were acoustically analysed to validate the difficulties identified via the production test. Independent-samples t-tests were conducted to identify any significant differences in performance for the two groups. The results showed that learners encountered problems in the production of low vowels, especially /ɒ/, /æ/ and /ʌ/. The study concluded that these problems are probably ascribed to the complexities of the L2 vowel space, where vowels are close to each other and thus difficult to produce. Significant differences were identified between the two groups in terms of error means. Nonetheless, the comparison between the vowel chart obtained in this study and the charts offered in previous studies revealed that Iraqi EFL learners are still far from attaining approximant pronunciation. This requires reconsidering current texts, methodologies, and techniques used in teaching English pronunciation to allocate more attention to spectral differences among vowels. Public speaking adalah salah satu kunci keberhasilan dalam mempromosikan atau menggerakkan masyarakat, dalam hal ini adalah para santri Panti Asuhan Dewi Masyithoh (PADIMAS), Kabupaten Pemalang. PADIMAS memiliki program Gerakan Sedekah Sampah yang memberikan dampak positif bagi lingkungan. Meksipun demikian, para santri menghadapi kendala dalam mengomunikasikan program tersebut kepada masyarakat. Pelatihan public speaking ini berfokus pada penyampaian materi tentang bagaimana cara mempersiapkan mental serta tips lainnya saat berbicara di depan umum yang salah satunya adalah berpidato, serta pengayaan ungkapan-ungkapan dalam komunikasi sehari-hari serta pidato menggunakan Bahasa Inggris. Jumlah peserta pelatihan ini sebanyak 21 orang baik laki-laki maupun perempuan yang aktif bersekolah mulai dari SMP hingga universitas. Hasilnya adalah peningkatan pengetahuan santri terkait strategi menarik perhatian audiens pada saat public speaking meskipun beberapa pada aspek kepercayaan diri masih belum menunjukkan peningatan yang signifikan dan memerlukan pengamatan lebih mendalam.Public Speaking is one of the keys to success in promoting or organizing the community, in this case, the Dewi Masyithoh Orphanage (PADIMAS), Pemalang Regency. The student of PADIMAS has a program, Garbage Alms Movement (Gerakan Sedekah Sampah), which has an excellent environmental impact. Despite this, the students needed help communicating the program effectively to the community. This training focused on delivering materials like how to prepare mentally and other tips when conducting public speaking, one of which is giving a speech, as well as enriching expressions in daily communication and speech using English. The result is a rise in students' knowledge of techniques for attracting an audience's attention during public speaking; some aspects of self-confidence have yet to improve significantly and require more investigation.
