Erythrosis Pigmentosa Peribuccalis in an Adolescent: Dermoscopic Description and Management

Abstract: Erythrosis pigmentosa peribuccalis is an infrequent condition, with fewer than 35 cases reported in the literature, that affects mainly women. It presents as small papules that form a hyperpigmented plaque around the mouth and nose. Little is known about the etiology of this condition, its dermoscopic characteristics have not been described, and no effective treatment has been reported. We report a 15-year-old girl with this rare dermatosis who was successfully managed with daily calcipotriol, weekly topical i… Show more

“…Mouni et al [7] later on revealed similar findings in their patients. Similar dermoscopic findings can be seen in erythrosis pigmentosa peribuccalis which is considered to be a variant of this disease by few authors [8]. EFFC can be differentiated from many close differentials on dermoscopy.…”

“…EFFC can be differentiated from many close differentials on dermoscopy. Dermoscopy of melasma reveals light to dark brown uniform patches with capillary network while brownish pseudonetwork along with gray dots and granules with telangiectatic vessels seen in Reihl melanosis [8,9]. Keratosis pilaris rubra atrophicans faciei displays whitish follicular plugs with reddish background with telangiectatic vessels being observed at times, and in poikiloderma of Civatte, structureless brownish pigmentation and telangiectatic vessels can be demonstrated [6].…”

“…[ 8 ] Dermoscopy of EPM includes follicular dilatation with yellowish keratotic plugs, perifollicular erythema, and scaling surrounded by slate-gray globules. [ 9 ] Histology of EFFC and EPM is similar and shows follicular hyperkeratosis, increased basal layer pigmentation, and incontinence of melanin pigment with dermal melanophages. Dermis shows perivascular and periadnexal lymphocytic infiltrate with vasodilatation.…”
