In this review, we explore some aspects of Pseudomonas aeruginosa virulence factors that are related to disease development in healthy organisms and resistance to antibiotics. This pathogen is one of the most clinically and epidemiologically important bacteria in Brazil, being the major cause of opportunistic infections. Among the virulence factors, biofilm formation acting of manner different in the organism. Furthermore, we review several P. aeruginosa genes that act in antimicrobial resistance, such as β-lactamases against β-lactamers. The resistance to pied-lactamases in P. aeruginosa is associated to resistance to the broad-spectrum cephalosporin. Monitoring fluoroquinolone resistance among ESBL-positive and ESBL-negative Escherichia coli strains isolated from urinary tract infections: An alert for empirical treatment

Background: Bacterial resistance to extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) is present worldwide. Empirical antibiotic therapy is often needed, and the use of fluoroquinolones, such as ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin, is common. This study aimed to analyze the urine cultures from 2,680 outpatients in January 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, with bacterial counts above 100,000 CFU/mL in which Escherichia coli was the etiological agent. Methods: We monitored the resistance of ESBL-positive and ESBL-negative strains to ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin and evaluated resistance rates. Results: Significantly higher fluoroquinolone resistance rates were observed among ESBL-positive strains in all years studied. Furthermore, a significant increase in the rate of fluoroquinolone resistance was observed between 2021 and 2022 in ESBL-positive and -negative strains, as well as from 2020 to 2021 among the ESBL-positive strains. Conclusions: The data obtained in the present study showed a tendency towards an increase in fluoroquinolone resistance among ESBL-positive and -negative E. coli strains isolated from urine cultures in Brazil. Since empirical antibiotic therapy with fluoroquinolones is commonly used to treat diverse types of infections, such as community-acquired urinary tract infections, this work highlights the need for continuous monitoring of fluoroquinolone resistance among E. coli strains circulating in the community, which can mitigate the frequency of therapeutic failures and development of widespread multidrug-resistant strains.

Enhancement of antibiotic activity by phytocompounds of Turnera subulata

Several studies have shown that plants of plant origin are more relevant, where the antibacterial and modulating action of antibiotic resistance is highlighted. Turnera subulata is popularly known as "chanana". This plant species is commonly used in Brazilian popular medicine to treat infections and In the search for new alternatives to treat infections caused by resistant microorganisms, many studies. The present study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial and modulating activity of the methyl extract obtained from Turnera subulate alone or in combination with aminoglycoside antibiotics, using the microdilution method. The methyl extract of Turnera subulata was used alone in the antibacterial test, and in combination with antibiotics in the modulation assay. All tests were performed in triplicate. The methyl extract of Turnera subulata presented both antibacterial and antibiotic-modulating effects in vitro, alone or in association with aminoglycosides. The activity of the extract depends on the bacterial strain and may be associated with the presence of tannins and flavonols. However, further studies are required to characterize the potential of Turnera subulata in the development of new drugs against multiresistant bacteria.
