Essential Oil of Daucus glaber Forssk

Abstract: The composition of the essential oil of the fruits, leaves and stems of Daucus glaber Forssk has been studied by GC/MS. It was found that, the essential oil of the fruits consists of monoterpene hydrocarbons (limonene and sylvestrene are the majors) and phenylpropanoids (elemicin is the major). Sylvestrene has never been reported before in the essential oil of any Daucus species. The study of the essential oil of the leaves revealed the presence of monoterpene hydrocarbons; limonene and γ-terpinene are the maj… Show more

“…However, the volatile oil of the herb in April was found to contain a mixture of 33 compounds, accounting for 99.01% of the total essential oil; the percentages of different classes are monoterpene hydrocarbons (61.32%), oxygenated monoterpenes (13.06%), sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (17.61%), oxygenated sesquiterpenes (1.46%), diterpene hydrocarbons (0.77%), sesterterpene hydrocarbons (1.51%), triterpene hydrocarbons (1.17%), esters (1.54%), and heterocyclic compounds (0.56%). with those reported by Mansour et al [17], who investigated the volatile oil of Daucus glaber in April 2004 and identified γ-terpinene as one of the main compounds. However, the volatile oil of the DS herb essential oil, with limonene, 4-terpineol, γ-elemene, α-bisabolol, tricosane, octacosane, nonacosane, fenchyl acetate and thiophene, tetrahydro-, 1,1-dioxide being the main compounds.…”

“…The presence of elemicin together with myristicin in the essential oil form Daucus glaber has been observed accompanied by a cytotoxic activity on the brine shrimp eggs (Mansour, Maatooq, Khalil, Marwan, & Sallam, 2004).…”

“…In Egypt, it grows wild in the sand dunes and sandy sea shores in the northern Nile Delta, Mediterranean coastal strips, and the coastal area and sandy plains of Sinai peninsula (Tackholm, 1974;Boulos, 2000). The chemical studies on the essential oils from the fruits, leaves and stems of D. glaber by GC/MS analysis have been reported (Mansour et al, 2004). In the present study, from the aerial parts of D. glaber, three new phenylpropanoid triesters, glaberins A (1), B (2), and C (3) (Fig.…”
