Estimation of serum malondialdehyde in potentially malignant disorders and post-antioxidant treated patients: A biochemical study

Abstract: Background:Tobacco causes the generation of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) which are responsible for the high rate of lipid peroxidation. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is the most widely used agent to estimate the extent of lipid peroxidation. Timely diagnosis of the condition followed by supplementation with antioxidants like beta-carotene, pro-vitamin A, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, lipoic acid, zinc, selenium, and spirulina can prevent potentially malignant disorders.Materials and Methods:In th… Show more

“…Control participants without the habit of tobacco consumption have shown the least peroxidation activity as compared with the controls with tobacco habits. A similar result was reported by Chole et al .,[ 19 ] D'souza et al .,[ 20 ] and Subapriya et al . [ 10 ] ( P < 0.05) in serum samples; whereas Khanna et al .…”

“…The MDA calorimetric assay provides a sensitive tool for detection of the MDA, by a Humalyzer junior photometer (Human Diagnostics, Germany) at the Biochemistry Department, University of Alexandria, Egypt. The MDA in the sample reacts with thiobarbituric acid (TBA) to generate MDA-TBA adduct that can be easily quantified colorimetrically(OD = 532 nm) [8] .…”
