Estimation of vitamin D levels in patients with pemphigus vulgaris

Abstract: Patients with PV have significantly lower serum vitamin D levels in comparison to controls and that these low levels were not related to age, BMI or pattern of sun exposure. The associated Vitamin D insufficiency in patients with PV may possibly exacerbate their disease through various immune related mechanisms.

“…Indirect evidence for a protective role of vitamin D with respect to autoimmune skin blistering comes from recent studies, which investigated serum vitamin D levels in patients with autoimmune bullous diseases . Similar to other autoimmune disorders like multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes mellitus, and systemic lupus erythematosus, significantly lower serum vitamin D levels were found in pemphigus and pemphigoid patients compared to controls, suggesting that vitamin D insufficiency is a potential risk factor for development or exacerbation of these diseases .…”

“…Yra tyrimų, rodančių, kad pacientams, sergantiems PV, iki pradedant gydymą, nustatoma ryškiai sumažėjusi vitamino D koncentracija. Tačiau iki šiol nepagrįsta įtaka ligos patofiziologiniam mechanizmui [17]. Būtina perspėti pacientus vengti per ilgo buvimo saulėje, nevalgyti labai karšto, aštraus maisto, prieš vartojant bet kokius papildomus vaistus pasitarti su savo gydytoju, vengti didelio streso [10].…”
