Ethnomathematics: Musical Instrumen in Ja'i Dances for Culturally Responsive Teaching in Elementary Schools

Abstract: In cultural responsive learning, teachers need to have the ability to explore mathematical phenomena in cultural elements as learning content. This research is a qualitative descriptive study aimed at exploring ethnomathematics in Bajawa traditional dances, namely the Ja,i dance, its relevance to competency standards and basic mathematics competencies in elementary schools. The approach used is ethnographic. The technique used is observation and study of documents and the researcher himself acts as the main in… Show more

“…The use of concrete objects in the kitchen can not only make mathematical activities meaningful but also as a means to introduce students to their own local culture. This statement is supported by several previous studies on ethnomathematics to recognize and preserve local culture (Akib, 2016;Nur et al, 2020;Bito & Fredy, 2020;Prahmana & D'Ambrosio, 2020).…”

“…This integration can be realized in the form of ethnomathematics-based mathematics learning tools (Hariastuti, 2019;Utami et al, 2018). Ethnomathematics-based learning uses local culture as the primary learning resource (Bito & Fredy, 2020;Nur et al, 2021). The process of learning mathematics cannot be separated from the characteristics of students' interaction with their social environment (Bito & Fredy, 2020;Nur et al, 2021).…”

“…An example of the concept of a triangle is located in the webbing on the walls of the dhol musical instrument. In other areas, the concepts of circles, tubes, and half balls were found on traditional ja'i dance musical instruments in the Flores area (Bito & Fredy, 2020).…”

“…Mathematics examines abstract objects and their mindset is deductive (Turgut & Turgut, 2018). Based on the cognitive development of elementary school students at the concrete operational stage, elementary school-aged children generally have difficulty understanding abstract things (Bito & Fredy, 2020;Nurlaily et al, 2019). Therefore, there is a need for educational media that can bridge children at the concrete operational stage in studying mathematics as an abstract science.…”
