This contribution describes the development of tape casting for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) anode supports starting with the characterization of the powders and ending with manufacturing of cells for stack testing. After casting the support, full cells were prepared by screen printing and sintering of the functional layers. The results of single‐cell and stack tests of the novel SOFC will be discussed. The new cell showed excellent electrochemical performance in single‐cell tests with more than 1.5 A/cm2 (800°C, 0.7 V). Furthermore, stack tests showed no significant difference from earlier standard cells when operated at 800°C with a current density of 0.5 A/cm2.

a b s t r a c tA systematic screening of plasticisers for a polyvinyl butyral based binder system revealed that dibutyl maleate, dibutyl adipate and Pycal 94 are promising and less toxic alternatives to the very harmful but frequently used dibutyl phthalate. Pycal 94 seems especially promising as it unlike the two other candidates did not require a co-plasticiser, such as a polyethylene glycol, thus simplifying the system and reducing the risk of unwanted cross-interactions.An effective and systematic procedure for substitution of the plasticiser, while maintaining chemical compatibility and mechanical properties, was also demonstrated. Incompatible systems were discarded in an initial broad screening while primary systems were further evaluated based on debinding properties, mechanical properties, flow behavior as well as sintering properties of ceramic tapes. The thermomechanical characterization performed on dried drops of binder and their corresponding tapes show strong similarities in the strain/stress profiles, validating the qualitative method used.

Polyvinyl butyral is used in safety glass interlayers, mainly in car windshields. Legislative regulations require a recycling of cars after their lifetime and therefore also their safety glass. This causes the availability of recycled polyvinyl butyrate (r-PVB) originated from safety glass interlayers. Due to deteriorated optical properties, such as the transparency, and unknown amounts of plasticizers, it is challenging to reuse the recycled material in new windshields. Therefore, it is of particular interest to find new fields of application for r-PVB, such as the usage as a textile coating. In this research, r-PVB was investigated as a material for yarn coating. Polyester and polyamide mono- and multifilament yarns were coated continuously with solely a polymer dispersion and with mixtures of crosslinking agent and polymer dispersion. Crosslinked r-PVB coatings showed enhanced properties toward abrasion and chemical resistance. Coatings without the crosslinking agent showed a diminished abrasion resistance and could be washed off with ethanol. Mechanical properties of the monofilaments were influenced by the r-PVB coating in general. However, varying concentrations of the crosslinking agent did not affect the mechanical properties.
