There has been accumulating interest in the application of medicinal plants as alternative medicine to treat various diseases and/or to develop modern medicines. Vitex negundo is one of such medicinal plants that has been of interest to many researchers and has been of use in traditional medicine . V. negundo is found in Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Malaysia, India, China, The Philippines and East Africa. Therapeutic properties of V. negundo have previously been reviewed. Different parts, preparations and bioactive components of V. negundo possess potential protective and therapeutic effects against cardiovascular disease and related conditions as demonstrated in previous studies. We review the present state of scientific knowledge on the potential use of V. negundo and some of its bioactive components in protecting against cardiovascular diseases and related pathologies. Previous studies in animal and non-animal experimental models, although limited in number and vary in design, seem to support the cardioprotective effect of V. negundo and some of its active components. However, there is need for further preclinical and clinical studies to validate the use of V. negundo and its active constituents in protection and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, since only a few V. negundo compounds have been evaluated, specific cardioprotective effects or mechanisms and possible side effects of other V. negundo compounds need to be extensively evaluated.

Objective: To deal with the formulation, characterization and pharmacological evaluation of anti-inflammatory polyphyto matrix tablet containing Carica papaya, Vitex negundo, Moringa oleifera and Boswellia serrata used as a novel drug delivery system. An attempt has been made to develop polyphyto matrix tablets by using HPMC and ethyl cellulose. Methods: Pharmacological screening of polyphyto matrix tablet was evaluated by using the carrageenan-induced paw edema rat model and the study carried out by using various doses (100, 200 and 300 mg/kg body weight) of three different polyphyto matrix formulations. Diclofenac sodium was used as a standard drug, due to its considerable report on antiinflammatory importance. Data were expressed by mean±SD; statistical analysis was performed by using ANOVA and p less than 0.05 considered as statistically significant. Results: Physical and chemical evaluation parameters of polyphyto matrix formulation exhibits potent and dose-dependent anti-inflammatory activity in all the tested animal groups. Formulation F1 significantly (p less than 0.05) suppresses the inflammation in the rat paw and found to be preeminent and stable in comparison with standard and other two (F2 and F3) formulations. Conclusion: Study reveals that the polyphyto matrix formulation could be useful as either an alternative or a complementary therapy in the management of all types of inflammation. It may be due to presence of terpenoids, alkaloids, glycosides and other phytochemical in herbs.

Punica granatum has been used for thousands of years to cure a wide range of diseases across different cultures and civilizations. The leaves of Punica granatum are used to calm stomach disorders, combat diarrhea, dysentery and hemorrhages, conjunctivitis etc. Recently the synthesis of nanoparticles mediated by plant leaf extracts for medicinal purposes is gaining grounds. Many workers have reported that the silver nanopartlces synthesized by aqueous leaf extracts are medicinally more efficient as compared to the leaf extracts itself. Thus in this study we report the synthesis and characterization of Punica granatum aqueous leaf extract mediated silver nanoparticles. For synthesis of the silver nanoparticles, the leaves of Punica granatum were collected and dried in shade and extracted in aqueous medium using Soxhlet extraction apparatus. The extract was used for synthesis of silver nanoparticles. The characterization of silver nanoparticles was done and the formation of silver nanoparticles was confirmed by change in the colour of solution from yellow to dark brown. The silver nanoparticles thus formed were subjected to UV-vis spectrophotometer, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Fourier-Transform Infra-red (FTIR) analysis for further characterization of the formed nanoparticles. Thus in this study we report the formation of silver nanoparticles in the range of 88.00 to 120nm and average size of particles were confirmed to be 98.93nm.
