Evaluation of antiarthritic activity of nimbolide against Freund’s adjuvant induced arthritis in rats

Abstract: Nimbolide, a triterpenoid isolated from flower of neem tree possess various therapeutic properties. The objective of the study was to assess the anti-arthritic activity of nimbolide in arthritis induced rats. Nimbolide (20 mg/kg per day) was given orally to arthritic rats induced with Complete Freund's Adjuvant and changes in paw volume, body weight, organ indices (thymus and spleen), arthritic score, biochemical parameters and proinflammatory cytokines levels were determined. Histopathological analysis was al… Show more

“…Arthritis is linked with the loss of lean body mass and weight and that is known as rheumatoid cachexia ( Patil et al, 2011 ). The large alterations in body mass seen in CFA-treated rats are consistent with previous research findings ( Choudhary et al, 2014 ; Cui et al, 2019 ).…”

The large alterations in body mass seen in CFA-treated rats are consistent with previous research findings (Choudhary et al, 2014;Cui et al, 2019). The arthritic score is a metric for measuring joint inflammation and is used to express the severity of arthritis (Choudhary et al, 2014).…”

“…Paw volume and arthritic index of CFA-induced rats were significantly reduced by D-carvone in a dose-dependent manner proving the capability of the antioxidant compound in preventing inflammation. CFA is known to induce chronic inflammation by up-regulating the migration of lymphocytes and macrophages along with the release of inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-10 [ 15 , 18 ]. These mediators in turn, cause damage to the tissue and articular cartilages, leading to osteoarthritic conditions [ 19 ].…”

“…Several bioactive compounds have been isolated from this plant species which exhibit multiple pharmacological effects. Cui et al performed the AA activity of nimbolide on male albino rats against Freund's adjuvant-induced arthritis [33]. A study was carried out to access the AA activities of nimbolide using different in vitro and in vivo analytical methods.…”
