In this study, we evaluated the inflammatory responses induced by aluminum silicate (AS) cytotoxicity in rat lungs. The prophylactic effect of propolis extract was evaluated in 60 adult male albino rats. The rats were divided into six groups: (1) a normal, healthy control group; (2) a normal group fed with 200 mL of propolis extract/Kg; (3) a low-dose positive control group injected with 5 mg/kg of AS; (4) a treated group given propolis and a low dose of AS; (5) a high-dose positive control group injected with 20 mg/kg of AS; and (6) a treated group given propolis with a high-dose of AS. At the end of the two-month experiment, the rats’ lungs were removed. For each pair of lungs, one portion was subjected to biochemical analysis and the other underwent hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining in order to study its histology. The rats that received AS doses displayed significant disorders in their antioxidant contents as well as in their enzymatic activities and their histopathological structures revealed severe damage to their lung tissues. Upon the rats being treated with propolis, the enzymatic and antioxidant contents improved and partial improvements in the lung structures appeared, including minimized congestion, a reduced hemorrhage of blood vessels and preserved bronchioles, alveolar ducts, and alveoli. The prophylactic effectiveness of propolis extract on the cytotoxicity of AS, owing to the antioxidant properties of propolis, were studied.

Received: April 2017, Accepted: May 2017 Background: Simultaneous exposure to noise and organic solvents such as styrene is an indispensable part of today's industries. Numerous studies were done related to ototoxic effects of coexposure to noise and styrene while some evidences showed the adverse effects of such exposure on other organs. In this study, we aimed to assess the subacute effects of combined exposure to noise and styrene on rats' lung tissue. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four Wistar male rats were divided in four groups including: A) control, B) rats exposed to 100 dB octave band of noise, C) rats exposed to 750 ppm styrene alone, and D) rats exposed to combination of 100 dB noise and 750 ppm styrene. Following the last day of exposure, the rats were euthanized and their lung tissues were excised, homogenized and assayed for biological analysis of malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The results were analyzed using SPSS software. Results: MDA increased significantly (P < 0.001) at the end of experiment in the group exposed to styrene and noise-styrene. GSH concentrations decreased significantly in styrene and noise-styrene group (P < 0.001). SOD (P < 0.001) and CAT (P < 0.05) activities were determined to be significantly lower for the styrene and noise-styrene groups compared to the control group. Conclusions: In conclusion, our results indicated that exposure to combination of noise and styrene caused oxidative stress, increased lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant depletion. These results appear to support the fact that co-exposure to noise and styrene might cause oxidative stress-induced damage to the lung tissue. Since simultaneous exposure to noise and styrene has an additive effect in this regard, further studies are necessary to be carried out on the effects of noise and organic solvents coexposure.

Evaluation of the antioxidant potential of Copaifera multijuga in Ehrlich tumor-bearing mice

Copaifera multijuga, commonly known as copaiba, is popularly used in the form of tea for various conditions due to the presence of antioxidant substances in its composition, which protect cells against damage caused by free radicals. Its oleoresin is also used as an anti-inflammatory and antitumoral agent. The present study investigated the antioxidant effect of the ethanolic extract of copaiba stem bark on Swiss mice inoculated with solid Ehrlich tumors. Mice were inoculated subcutaneously with 1x106 Ehrlich’s tumor cells and treated via gavage with ethanolic extract of copaiba for thirty days, with doses varying between 100 and 200 mg kg-1. Biochemical analyses of enzymatic antioxidants [superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST)], non-enzymatic antioxidants [reduced glutathione (GSH) and ascorbic acid (ASA)], substances reactive to thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) and protein carbonylation (carbonyl) in different tissues were significantly affected. The extract administered at 200 mg kg-1 presented higher antioxidant capacity in the liver, increased CAT, GST, GSH and decreased TBARS, as well as increased CAT activity and protein carbonylation in brain tissue. The results showed that the copaiba extract was able to reverse the oxidative stress caused by solid Ehrlich tumor, probably due to the presence of antioxidant compounds, and had potential antineoplasic effect after a 30-day treatment.
