Evaluation of antiulcer and phytochemical activities of leaf extracts from Tapinanthus dodoneifolius DC. (Loranthaceae) grown on Tamarindus indica tree

Abstract: Present study was carried out to determine the phytochemical constituents and activities of aqueous ethanolic leaf extract from Tapinanthus dodoneifolius grown on Tamarindus indica tree. Results obtained for phytochemical revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, glycosides and alkaloids. Antiulcer activity o ethanolic leaf extract from Tapinanthus dodoneifolius grown on Tamarindus indica tree was tested on wistar rats' stomach which was compared with standard antiulcer drug Omeparazole. Oral adm… Show more

“…21,22 Local use of the plant in depression has been reported in ethnomedical surveys by researchers in Cameroon and Nigeria respectively. 9,13 The oral acute toxicity profile of the extract revealed median lethal dose (LD50) greater than 5000 mg/kg body weight. No sign and symptom of toxicity or death was recorded in the acute toxicity study indicating the relatively non-toxic nature of the extract via the oral route of administration.…”

“…The antiulcer activity of ethanolic leaf extract African mistletoe was tested on wistar rats' stomach. The incidence of ulceration was reduced in a dose dependent manner by oral administration of aqueous ethanolic leaf extract at the dose of (500-1500mg/cm3) to Aspirin induced ulcerated wistar rats for one week [14].…”

“…Baso and Mudi, 2017 investigated the LD 50 of the aqueous ethanolic extract of the leaf of A. dodoneifolius to greater than 5000 mg/ kg p.o. Absence of lethality or toxic symptoms shows that the extract of A. dodoneifolius is acutely non-toxic [14].…”

“…Tapinanthus dodoneifolius DC Danser (Loranthaceae) is extensively used as medicinal plant in traditional medicine in Africa in the treatment of malaria, hypertension, cholera, asthma, epilepsy, cancer, and diabetes (Ekhaise et al, 2010 ;Nasri and Rafieian-Kopaei, 2014). Phytochemical screening showed the presence of anthraquinones, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, and tannins from Tapinanthus dodoneifolius (Deeni and Sadiq, 2002 ;Ekhaise et al, 2010 ;Baso and Mudi, 2017). However, very limited information is available on in vivo antidiabetic, antidyslipidaemic, antioxidant activities of T. dodoneifolius. Thus, the aim of this study was to contribute to the valuation of T. dodoneifoliusin the treatment of diabetes mellitus and its complications.…”
