Evaluation of building technology for mass producible millimetre-sized robots using flexible printed circuit boards

Abstract: Initial tests of a building technology for a compact three-dimensional mass producible microrobot are presented. The 3.9 × 3.9 × 3.3 mm 3 sized prototype robot represents a microsystem with actuators, sensors, energy management and integrated electronics. The weight of a folded robot is 65 mg and the total volume is less than 23 mm 3 . The design of the interfaces of the different modules in the robot, as well as the building technology, is described. The modules are assembled using conductive adhesive with in… Show more

“…Spiral-shaped devices with lengths of approximately 50 µm, that are able to swim in a controlled fashion under weak magnetic field application have already been constructed [55]. Fabrication of a prototype autonomous robot of size 3.9 × 3.9 × 3.3 mm 3 , with communication, locomotion and energy storage capabilities is possible [12]. The first controlled vertical flight of a 19 mm sized microrobot has been announced [39].…”

“…In particular, frame parts, actuators, motion controllers, power sources and sensors [2]. Instead of the conventional mechanical machining, micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) technology [3] based on IC production lines has been studied for making micro robot components [4]. In addition, the development of the actuator is an important subject.…”

“…These were quite different from the foot step of the insect. Also, MEMS technology was used for fabricating micro robots [4]. Even in this robot, the piezoelectric actuator was used and again the vibration generated the transfer.…”
