Evaluation of charge breeding options for EURISOL

Abstract: Abstract. A comprehensive study of charge breeding techniques for the most ambitious ISOL -facility project, EURISOL, is presented here. It is based on results obtained during the past years at CERN -ISOLDE and LPSC Grenoble with charge breeders of both ECR and EBIS types.

“…They are now adopted by most ECR charge breeders world-wide: a minimum-B-structure consisting of axial coils and a hexapole, an off-axis RF injection, permitting to insert a long grounded tube into the plasma chamber for injecting the 1þ beam into the ECR plasma, opposite to the extraction side of the booster. Compared to its concurrent technique, charge breeding in Electron Beam Ion Sources (EBIS), ECR charge breeding has several pros and cons [14]. ECR charge breeders are simple machines, intensity capable (no limitations observed up to the mA regime, see for instance Ref.…”

“…6 These parameters determine the breeding time, maximum charge state, transverse acceptance, and trap charge capacity. For REX-EBIS, 7 the ions are first cooled and bunched in a Penning trap filled with a buffer gas (REXTRAP) resulting in a beam with a sufficiently low emittance (10 π mm mrad) 8 to be accepted by the EBIS.…”

“…The relative success obtained with both charge breeders can be attested by the number of facilities which are starting using or developing one or the other technique. [2][3][4][5] On the roadmap to EURISOL, SPES, and SPIRAL 2 plan to use a PHOENIX ECR charge breeder, while ISOLDE has upgrade plans for REX-EBIS. However, for both techniques, a number of known issues remain.…”

“…However, for both techniques, a number of known issues remain. 5 r While ECR charge breeders have very high intensity capabilities, EBIS are intrinsically limited by space charge capacity (up to 10 10 charges/bunch). r EBIS provide high charge states and correspondingly low mass-over-charge ratios down to A/q ∼ 3.…”
