Evaluation of correlated Pandora column NO2 and in situ surface NO2 measurements during GMAP campaign

Abstract: Abstract. To validate the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS), the GEMS Map of Air Pollution (GMAP) campaign was conducted during 2020–2021 by integrating Pandora Asia Network, aircraft, and in situ measurements. In the present study, GMAP-2020 measurements were applied to evaluate urban air quality and explore the synergy of Pandora column (PC) NO2 measurements and surface in situ (SI) NO2 measurements for Seosan, South Korea, where large point source (LPS) emissions are densely clustered… Show more

“…Conversely, the equatorial Korea's Ministry of Environment has conducted intensive air quality observations [12] together with NASA in the United States [13] and is planning to carry out a second campaign for East Asia in 2024 after operating GEMS. In addition, the GEMS Map of Air Pollution (GMAP) campaigns were preliminarily carried out in 2020 and 2021 [55]. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, NASA, the Max Planck Institute in Europe, the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy, and the University of Bremen participated in the GMAP campaign.…”

“…Pandora NO 2 measurements are commonly used for air quality monitoring and management at the local scale [87]. Pandora NO 2 measurements can provide high-quality measurements of atmospheric pollutants with high temporal and spatial resolution, which can be useful for identifying sources of pollution and assessing the effectiveness of pollution control measures at the local scale [89]. However, Pandora NO 2 measurements have limited spatial coverage and may not provide a complete picture of atmospheric pollution over larger areas [90].…”

“…The Pandora data from Seoul tend to show an increasing trend in the early morning followed by flat concentrations over the rest of the daytime, with less diurnal variation than NO2 concentrations in surface air (Crawford et al, 2021). Nearby sites can show different diurnal variations, 75 pointing to a major role of local transport in driving this variation (Chang et al, 2022;.…”
