Evaluation of cytotoxic, genotoxic and antigenotoxic potential of Solanum lycocarpum fruits glicoalkaloid extract in V79 cells

Abstract: Solanum lycocarpum St.-Hil (Solanaceae) is a hairy shrub or small much-branched tree of the Brazilian Cerrado, popularly known as "fruit-of-wolf". Considering that the induction of chromosomal mutations is involved in the process of carcinogenesis, and that S. lycocarpum is often used in folk medicine, it becomes relevant to study its effect on genetic material. In this sense, the aim of present study was to determine the possible cytotoxic, genotoxic and antigenotoxic potentials of S. lycocarpum fruits glycoa… Show more

“…The fruits are usually consumed 'in natura' or used in jellies, jams, or pasta preparations (VIEIRA JR. et al, 2003). It is widely used in traditional medicine as a sedative, in the treatment of epilepsy, asthma, diabetes, obesity, reduction of cholesterol levels, and abdominal and renal pains (MUNARI et al, 2012). However, in our knowledge, there are few reports in the literature of biological activities of ripe fruits of S. lycocarpum.…”

“…Many constituents were already cytotoxic and mutagenic, and caused depleted levels of glutathione. They induced DNA damage in mammalian cells (45,46). Cellular responses of different lung cancer cells against potential antitumor and prooxidative effects of Thymus revolutus Célak essential oil and its two main constituents depended on the application of concentrations, incubation times, and cell properties such as drug resistance and EGFR expression capacity.…”
