Evaluation of effectiveness of photosensitizers used in laser endodontics disinfection: A systematic review

Abstract: Photo-activated disinfection using photosensitizers has been proposed as an adjunct to conventional endodontic therapy for additional disinfection and improved treatment outcomes. This systematic review aims to investigate the effectiveness of photosensitizers used in laser endodontics disinfection. A comprehensive literature search is conducted to identify in vitro and in vivo studies involving photo-activated disinfection in endodontic treatment. Publications are selected based on predetermined eligibility c… Show more

“…But when low power diode laser combined with toluidine blue as in group (IV) the percentage of reduction increased to 88.13%. These results were in agreement with the results of Sin (37) and results of López-Jiménez (18) who stated that photo activated disinfection is less efficient in reducing the numbers of Enterococcus faecalis. This result was in disagreement with the findings of Sarda (38) who stated that Photodynamic therapy PDT was an influential method in elimination of root canal microorganisms.…”

“…[1][2][3] Furthermore, the effects of laser light on the mechanisms of cavity preparation and dentin surface treatment 4,5 as well as the disinfection process 6 and various dimensions of tissue regeneration are evident. 7,8 These effects are currently well-used, and the applications of lasers and LEDs in various treatments of different areas of dentistry have received remarkable attention and proved to be highly efficient. [9][10][11][12] Lasers are used in endodontic treatments to assist in decay removal, to access cavity preparation, and to treat the dentin surface in the canal to remove the smear layer.…”

“…Recently, the role of xanthene-based photosensitizer Rose Bengal (RBP) has been investigated to evaluate its effects as an antimicrobial disinfectant against canal bacteria. 10 It is an anionic red or rose color dye that belongs to the tetrachloro-tetraiodo derivative of fluorescein. It absorbs light in the wavelength range of visible light 500–800 nm.…”
