Evaluation of flow regimes in a semi‐cylindrical spouted bed through statistical, mutual information, spectral and Hurst's analysis

Abstract: Hydrodynamic studies were conducted in a semi-cylindrical spouted bed column of diameter 150 mm, height 1000 mm, conical base included angle of 60 • and inlet orifice diameter 25 mm. Pressure transducers at several axial positions were used to obtain pressure fluctuation time series with 1.2 and 2.4 mm glass beads at U/U ms from 0.3 to 1.6, and static bed depths from 150 to 600 mm. The conditions covered several flow regimes (fixed bed, incipient spouting, stable spouting, pulsating spouting, slugging, bubble … Show more

“…Autocorrelation and frequency analysis of PF signals have been used to characterize fluidization and spouting flow regimes by several previous authors (Karamavruc and Clark, 1997; Johnsson et al, 2000; Trnka et al, 2000; Wang et al, 2001; Xu et al, 2004a; Dahikar and Sonolikar, 2006; Piskova and Mörl, 2007; Oliveira et al, 2008). Figures 6 and 7 plot the autocorrelation function and power‐spectra density (PSD) calculated from PF signals recorded at several height for the dry bed (stable system) on the left, and for an unstable system where there was a 4.0 mL/min flow of a 5% sucrose solution on the right.…”

“…The appearance of characteristic frequencies in the wet spouted beds can also be seen in Figure 7b for the PSD for the PF signals at positions P 4 , P 5 , and P 6 , reflecting complex phenomena in the wet spouted beds, as depicted in Table 2 and Figure 3. The power spectra for the PF signals at positions P 4 , P 5 , and P 6 , indicate dominant peaks at low frequencies (∼1.0 Hz), characteristic of unstable systems (Oliveira et al, 2008). It can be observed in Figure 7b that the PSD at the P 6 position shows good strength and resolution.…”

“…Different methodologies have been applied for data analysis, including statistical or correlation methods, powerspectral density, and deterministic chaos (He et al, 1997;Bai et al, 1999;Briens, 2000;Van Ommen et al, 1999, 2000Van den Schaaf et al, 2004;Issangya et al, 2000;Wang et al, 2001;Xu et al, 2004a,b,c;Chaplin et al, 2005;Oliveira et al, 2008). Although such measurements are useful, they may present difficulties, including tap penetration of the vessel wall, plugging by particulates, and alteration of the dynamic signal by lines connecting the taps and pressure sensors.…”
