“…These studies were undertaken with the aim of investigating the effects of the ivermectin CRC on the multispecies lungworm infection in sheep. The results of these studies confirm the excellent therapeutic efficacy of the ivermectin CRC against the lungworms D. filaria and P. rufescens as found previously in dose confirmation and field studies (Rehbein et al, 1998, 1999). Over the whole delivering period of about 100 days, treatment with the ivermectin CRC effectively reduced the numbers of the lung parenchyma dwelling protostrongylid nematodes C. ocreatus , N. linearis and P. brevispiculum , which are known to be less susceptible to anthelmintics.…”

“…The lower contamination of pasture decreases the risk of infecting other animals and enhances the benefits from treatment with an ivermectin CRC. Furthermore, the results of a field study suggest that treatment with an ivermectin CRC protects sheep from establishment of incoming protostrongylid lungworm infections (Rehbein et al, 1999).…”

“…Nematode parasitism negatively impacts the production (meat, milk, wool) and reproduction of sheep and has the capability to seriously compromise the health and welfare of the animals. Even subclinical nematode infections cause losses of productivity as demonstrated repeatedly by treatment-induced improved performance e. g., [ 1 10 ]. Therefore, a prerequisite for economically sustainable sheep farming and efficient production is the effective control of ovine nematode parasites [ 8 , 11 ].…”

“…(Ahmed et al, 1983 andTalabi, 2002). More over, improvement of weight gain (Rehbein et al, 1999), improved fertility rate of ewes (Garcia-Perez et al, 2002) and increase milk yield and birth weight of lambs (Fthenakis et al, 2005). The weight gain of lambs is highest in ewes given separate anthelmintic treatment for Fasciola and nematodes than that given one drug for both parasites (Maingi et al, 2002).…”
