Evaluation of the Impact of High Penetration Levels of PV Power Plants on the Capacity, Frequency and Voltage Stability of Egypt’s Unified Grid

Abstract: In this paper, the impact of integrating photovoltaic plants (PVPs) with high penetration levels into the national utility grid of Egypt is demonstrated. Load flow analysis is used to examine the grid capacity in the case of integrating the desired PVPs and computer simulations are also used to assess the upgrading of the transmission network to increase its capacity. Furthermore, the impact of increasing the output power generated from PVPs, during normal conditions, on the static voltage stability was explor… Show more

“…In a distribution grid connected WPP, the overall system impedance angle (X/R) ratio seen at the PCC (X/R PCC ) and the Short Circuit Capacity (SCC) are important parameters that affect V PCC stability [7,8]. Short Circuit Ratio (SCR), defined as the grid's SCC divided by the power generated by WPP (P wind ) [9], is another determining factor.…”

“…The P-V curve is applied to determine the maximum real power loading margin which also known as static voltage stability margin. The power system load is gradually increased and stopped when the voltage collapse point or nose of the PV curve is reached [24].…”

“…Although Egypt is rich in various renewable energy sources, these sources have not been optimally exploited yet [29]. Most of the generated electricity in Egypt is thermally produced from either gas, steam or combined cycle.…”

“…The average yearly solar radiation over New Valley ranges between 2800 and 3200 kWh/m 2 according to the average values during the last 20 years. The daily duration of sunshine fluctuates between 9 and 11 h [29]. This climate gives New Valley the priority for investment in renewable energy projects.…”
