Evidence for CAT gene being functionally involved in the susceptibility of COVID‐19

Abstract: Novel coronary pneumonia (COVID-19) is a respiratory distress syndrome caused by a new type of coronavirus. The disease began to break out in Wuhan, China, at the end of 2019, and officially entered the global pandemic phase in April 2020. Until now, it is still in a pandemic stage in a number of countries. 1-3 So far, the cumulative number of deaths due to COVID-19 worldwide has reached 1 870 000. The COVID-19 is the direct cause of the current global political and economic turmoil. From an epidemiological pe… Show more

“…CAT-mediated decomposition of H 2 O 2 to water minimizes the downstream flow of excessive ROS, which otherwise could trigger OxS and m -Dys in COVID-19 and PASC patients. CAT plays a crucial intermediary role in S-protein binding to hACE2 receptors, thereby affects the host susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection 573 . CAT could also regulate cytokine production in leukocytes, protect alveolar cells from oxidative injury, and block SARS-CoV-2 replication 574 .…”

“…[ 72 ] Moreover, CAT has been shown to play a protective role in pulmonary fibrosis by protecting lung epithelial cells from hydrogen peroxide–induced apoptosis, thereby reducing susceptibility to COVID-19. [ 73 , 74 ] As a classical glycolytic enzyme, GAPDH is involved in cytosolic energy production. Moreover, GAPDH may have additional functions, which are independent of its well-documented role in glycolysis.…”

“…The above findings support the authors’ hypothesis that CAT may affect COVID-19 susceptibility. However, future studies are needed to verify this association [ 142 ]. It is worth mentioning that there is evidence of the involvement of CAT in respiratory diseases, such as asthma and pulmonary fibrosis [ 143 , 144 ].…”
