Evidence for Intramolecular N−H···O Resonance-Assisted Hydrogen Bonding in β-Enaminones and Related Heterodienes. A Combined Crystal-Structural, IR and NMR Spectroscopic, and Quantum-Mechanical Investigation

Abstract: The resonance-assisted hydrogen bond (RAHB) is a model of synergistic interplay between π-delocalization and hydrogen-bond (H-bond) strengthening originally introduced (Gilli, G.; Bellucci, F.; Ferretti, V.; Bertolasi, V. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1989, 111, 1023; Bertolasi, V.; Gilli, P.; Ferretti, V.; Gilli, G. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1991, 113, 4917) for explaining the abnormally strong intramolecular O−H···O bonds formed by the ···OC−CC−OH··· β-enolone fragment I which are typical of β-diketone enols. “…The predicted bond angles and bond length at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory are identical to those calculated at the same level in a previous study (Gilli et al, 2000;Eberlin et al, 1990). Table 1 shows that the calculated properties depend on the theoretical level used for optimization but in general the results are almost indicate a strong conjugation within the sexmembered chelated ring of the molecule.…”

“…3, it can be seen that at pH 11.0, the proposed DMIP-SPE column exhibits the highest recovery. This is probably due to the fact that at pH 11.0, OH-PCBs would be dissociated and negatively charged, therefore the charge-assisted N-H…O (-) hydrogen bonding interactions will be formed between OH-PCBs and the polymer [29,30]. In addition, it should be noted that a relatively high recovery can also be observed at pH 3.0.…”

“…OH, SO 2 Me, Br, B(OH) 2 , Me), some hydrogen bonding and some hydrophobic. A description of these arrangements will be given, and they will be compared with the packing arrangements of aromatic hydrocarbons [4]. The role of the functional groups in the formation of the patterns will be discussed.…”

“…Both effects are known to play an important role in nature by controlling proton transmission in water and water flow without proton transmission in aquaporins. Π-bond cooperativity is the driving force controlling resonance- [1][2][3][4]. Π-bond anticooperativity has never been considered so far and it is investigated here by studying couples of H-bonded β-enolone and/or β-enaminone 6-membered rings fused through a common C=O or C-C bond.…”
