Evolving towards a critical point: A possible electromagnetic way in which the critical regime is reached as the rupture approaches

Abstract: Abstract. In analogy to the study of critical phase transitions in statistical physics, it has been argued recently that the fracture of heterogeneous materials could be viewed as a critical phenomenon, either at laboratory or at geophysical scales. If the picture of the development of the fracture is correct one may guess that the precursors may reveal the critical approach of the main-shock. When a heterogeneous material is stretched, its evolution towards breaking is characterized by the appearance of micro… Show more

“…The exponent H characterizes the persistent/anti-persistent properties of the signal (Kapiris et al, 2003(Kapiris et al, , 2004a. The range 0<H <0.5 (1<β<2) indicates anti-persistency, which means that if the fluctuations increase in a period, it is likely to decrease in the interval immediately following and vice versa.…”

“…6a and c, corresponded to remote and posterior periods, respectively, the N A versus τ dependences exhibit the power law: shown by straight lines in these figures. The power law distribution of waiting times is an indication of the long-time correlation between events: "the system refers to its history in order to define its future" (Kapiris et al, 2003). At the same time, the time sequence of ice-field accelerations does not follow the power law in the immediate time interval before the "catastrophic" perturbation (Fig.…”
