Exercise combined with a probiotics treatment alters the microbiome, but moderately affects signalling pathways in the liver of male APP/PS1 transgenic mice

Abstract: It has been demonstrated that physical exercise and probiotic supplementation delay the progress of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) in male APP/PS1TG mice. However, it has also been suggested that both exercise and AD have systemic effects. We have studied the effects of exercise training and probiotic treatment on microbiome and biochemical signalling proteins in the liver. The results suggest that liver is under oxidative stress, since SOD2 levels of APP/PS1 mice were decreased when compared to a wild type of mice.… Show more

“…It has been reported that probiotic interventions can effectively prevent cognitive impairment and improve cognition in both humans and other animals [24,28]. Additionally, several studies have described the beneficial effects of exercise and probiotic treatment on cognition in mouse models of AD [29][30][31]. However, these studies have mainly evaluated the effects of such interventions on specific memory domains.…”

“…On the contrary, Abraham and co-workers (2019) [ 90 ] and Teglas and co-workers (2020) [ 91 ] expose AD-injected mice with probiotic supplementation together with interval treadmill running. Interestingly, they discover that these combination resulted in the increase of Lactobacillus reuteri in gut, NRF-2 in the liver, and 8-oxodG level in hippocampus in addition to other outcome as witnessed by other researchers [ 56 , 57 ].…”

“…Prebiotic inulin and dietary inulin may suppress inflammation and modulate gut macrobiotics during T2DM progression ( 81 ). In AD patients, cognitive function was improved after treatment with probiotics containing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium ( 82 , 83 ).…”
