Exercise in the Treatment and Prevention of Diabetes

Abstract: The inclusion of regular physical activity is critical for optimal insulin action and glycemic control in individuals with diabetes. Current research suggests that Type II diabetes mellitus can be prevented and that all types of diabetes can be controlled with physical activity, largely through improvements in muscular sensitivity to insulin. This article discusses diabetes prevention and the acute and chronic benefits of exercise for individuals with diabetes, along with the importance and impact of aerobic, … Show more

“…The positive effects of PA are well known. Physical activity plays a very important role in primary and secondary prevention of many diseases and disorders, e.g., cardiovascular disease [1], obesity [2], type II diabetes [3], osteoporosis [4], and low back pain [5]. Previous studies proved that with aging, the physical capacity declined [6,7] but the requirements of work usually did not change with the age and years of service.…”

“…Indeed, regular aerobic physical activity (training) induces cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal adaptive responses (Warburton et al 2006), which increase resistance to conditions leading to increased ROS production including prolonged or strenuous exercise (Ebbeling & Clarkson 1989). Moreover, it maintains insulin sensitivity and cardiorespiratory fitness, preventing T2DM (Colberg 2007, Colberg & Grieco 2009) and coronary heart diseases (Thompson et al 2003). Regular physical activity can also be used in the management of patients affected by T2DM (O'Gorman & Krook 2008) and chronic heart failure (Edelmann et al 2014).…”
