The study of the subject psychological resources is currently topical. In various fields of science, there is a search for human protection factors from negative influences. The article presents a theoretical overview of research approaches and tools for the study of human psychological resources. Theoretical analysis shows lack of single comprehensive concept of resources. Currently, there are various different approaches to the definition of resources. The article presents a brief overview of research within the framework of the dispositional approach, reflecting the research search for universal resources for the individual. Some scientists emphasise both intrapsychic phenomena and personality traits which act as a resource. Other researchers pay attention to extrapsychic phenomena preconditioning support and recovery. Both approaches are important in obtaining scientific data on resources in Russian psychology. In foreign psychology, a typological research approach is used, comparing respondents with different levels of adaptation. A resource is understood as a structure of possibilities and available reactions giving "strength" to a person and helping to cope with difficult situations. The main tools within this approach are authors' questionnaires. A review of studies in which questionnaires were used was conducted. The review shows that they are not only valid, but also have a prognostic function regarding the mental well-being and health of respondents. However, only one of the questionnaires has been adapted in Russia and has experience in using it. Qualitative research methods can be used to study small groups and focus on the subjective experience of using the resource.
